Hi! My name is Denise Brusveen, and I grew up on a small family dairy farm in southern Minnesota. I ventured out to Wisconsin to attend college at UW-Madison in 2001 (and also promptly became a Packers fan). I thought that I would spend the rest of my life working in the dairy industry. That was before I got pregnant.
I married my husband in 2005, during my first semester of graduate school. In 2007, we decided to start a family. Early in my pregnancy, a neighbor gave me a bunch of books to read. I started reading Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way by Susan McCutcheon, and decided that we would be taking Bradley Method® Childbirth Classes. Little did I know that that was the beginning of a passion I would develop for birth.
I have been blessed with three beautiful children. It was after the birth of our first that I knew I wanted to teach other couples what my husband and I had learned in our Bradley Method® Classes. I also knew that I wanted to be involved more closely with birth as a doula. Both of these pieces had been critical in shaping my birth experiences in such a positive way.
I took my Birth Doula training in October 2008, and in 2009, I began the process to become certified as a Bradley Method® Teacher. I completed the process and taught my first series in the spring of 2010. I also attended my first birth as a doula later that year. I thoroughly enjoy being a part of the birth journey for women and their partners. I love seeing them “get it.” That they have choices. That birth is normal and not an illness. That they are strong. That birth is beautiful. That it has the power to transform them.
